As the year draws to a close, we thank everyone who has supported TAPP during our first year ... our members, experts, speakers, and sponsors.

We also want to share some of the tips that resonated with us. We hope everyone has a great holiday and start to the New Year!

 Did You Know....

  • Standing with a wide stance, hands on the hips shows power and confidence. But be careful not to show too much confidence or you may seem arrogant. When requesting or giving a recommendation on LinkedIn, be very specific, for example, include how long you worked together and on what specific projects they/you were useful.
  • At a networking event, it helps to ask open-ended questions when establishing a new connection.
  • Skype is a great tool for those who work at home; you can even attend a meeting at the office via Skype.
  • If you are self-employed, you have to pay a self-employment tax – the tax that a typical employer would pay – in addition to income tax.
  • If you are considering working part time at any point in your life, even years in the future, you should start planning for it now financially.
  • When hiring part-time, be very clear on the questions you can ask in an interview.
  • Picking 3 tasks on your to-do list every day that would make your day worthwhile, helps you prioritize and keeps you from spending too much time doing things aren’t all that important.
  • A new study shows that moms who work part-time are less depressed and healthier than moms who don’t work at all.

We have had a very busy spring in the TAPP office.  We launched the first ever Part-time Professional of the Year Award and were excited by the quality of the nominations. Thank you to all the companies who sponsored the award as well as our supporting organizations.  There have been numerous guest bloggers for our new blog. There are more than 40 posts so if you haven't had a chance to take a look, please check them out. Part-time Professional of the Year Award Winner

Jennifer Sabatini Fraone,  Assistant Director, Marketing, and NEWFA for Boston College Center for Work & Family has been named the 2012 Part-time Professional of the Year. The nominations were judged by Steve Dailey, Austin, TX, Jennifer Martin, Plymouth, MN and Sharon Gates, Wilbraham, MA. They were asked to make their judgement based upon how each nominee fulfilled the criteria of a Part-time Professional.

TAPP is applying for a $250,000 Grant and needs your vote. We need 250 votes to have our application reviewed. To vote,

  1. Go to missionsmallbusiness.com
  2. Click 'Log In & Support' and log in using Facebook.
  3. Search for TAPP OR filter by our State and City.
  4. Click on the blue Vote button next to our business name to show your support for our business.

TAPP will appear as TAPP - Talented Alliance of Part-time Professionals, Malden, MA.

The program, which will award up to 12 individual grants of $250,000, was developed to provide small businesses with capital and innovative marketing resources needed to make a positive impact on their business.

Chase and LivingSocial invite small business owners who have been in business for at least two years and have less than 100 employees to visit missionsmallbusiness.com to enter the program. Each business will be required to answer questions about why their business is unique, outline a proposed plan for utilizing the grant to grow their business and describe how the business is involved with its community.

Message From The CEO

Labor Day signals the unofficial end of summer and the start of school, more meetings, etc. For many, this week is the calm before the 'storm' (or after for those on the east coast)... a great time to stop, reflect, and plan for the fall. Its the perfect time to sign up for our new FREE Basic Membership and start exploring our site. A Basic Membership includes one featured webinar per month as well as access to our discussion boards. The discussion boards are new, so we invite you to start some conversations (which you can do with the anonymityof a username). In addition, Courtney who is profiled in this issue will be answering your questions about technology on the discussion boards. Reflections on the Internship

This summer, we were fortunate to have Anna Hawthorne as our marketing intern. Anna is a rising senior majoring in Economics and English at Mt. Holyoke College. She is the founder and president of Women in Business at Mt. Holyoke. Some of her duties included handling social media and twitter, updating the website, making calls to prospective members, creating podcasts, and creating marketing materials. Message From The CEO

Fall has arrived and this week in the northeast, we have had a taste of the cold to come. However in true New England fashion, this weekend will be warm and summerlike. September has been busy in our office and we have some new offerings underway. Arnie Fertig has joined our team of experts. He is a job coach and will share his expertise on resumes for the premium members. In addition, he will be the presenter on how to use Linkedin during our November webinar. We have launched a member get a member campaign to help spread the word about TAPP(see below for details). Basic membership is FREE!

There is a new section of the website: blogs to follow. If you have any blogs that you follow (or write), please let us know and we will add them to the list. Also, we are hiring and our job ads can be found on the TAPP website. If you or someone you know is looking for a job, please consider applying. Latest News - Member Get a Member Campaign

Help TAPP to grow by recruiting new members and have your name entered into a drawing for a $50 American Express Gift Card. The winner will be notified the week of October 17th. Its easy.

Latest Webinars

In September we offered two webinars. The first, “A Conversation With 3 Part-time Professionals,” took place September 15th and featured panelists Jennifer Martin, Erika Philbrook, and Sue Pine. This live Q&A session provided insights into the benefits, challenges, quirks, and surprises associated with working part-time, from the perspective of part-time professionals. Some of the questions asked included “How did you search for and finally land your part-time position?”; “How do you communicate with your supervisor about your schedule?”; and “What is an unexpected challenge you have been faced with since you started working part-time, and how did you overcome it?”.

 

Our second webinar this month, “Transitioning to Part-time,”  took place September 27th and featured panelists Courtney Carrier,Allison Peterson, and Becky Stewart. This program focused on the process of transitioning to part-time work from either working full-time or not working. Some of the questions asked/lessons learned included "How did you broach the topic of switching to part-time with your boss?; Do you have any thoughts on how a new part-timer can prepare him/herself to be up-to-date technically?”; and “If you could give someone considering part-time work one piece of advice, what would it be?”.


Did You Know?

Did you know that many video chat applications also include screen sharing and file sharing capabilities? For those of you working part-time from home (or considering this work arrangement for the future), think about whether an application like Skype, iChat, or VSeecould be a helpful tool for staying connected and working efficiently with your supervisor, coworkers, and colleagues in the office.

Message From The CEO

July has been an interesting month. We learned the hard way that it is not always possible to restore files from back ups when our website server (hosted offsite) crashed. A sobering experience but one which has provided us the opportunity to create a slightly new look to the website and add features. If you are a member of TAPP, you should make sure that you create a new login to be able to access all of the articles, the new discussion boards, and archived webinars.


We have had a summer marketing intern, Anna Hawthorne, who has been a tremendous asset in our marketing endeavors. We would like to thank our founding member companies for their support. If you know a company who would benefit from our services, please pass our information along!


I have been asked to be a guest blogger at HR Chatterbox. The blog will be published in August so please watch for it and let me know what you think. Enjoy the rest of the summer!.

In June and July, we hosted a webinar series for jobseekers entitled "Getting Hired" with guest speaker Peggy Collins. The series included three sessions. Click on the title to learn more about each session. If you are a member, you can watch the archived webinar after you login to the website.

  • The Blueprint For a Successful Job Search - Recorded June 16, 2011 One fact we learned in this session is that 70% of jobs are not advertised. In order to be considered for one of these "hidden jobs", consider adding informational interviews, targeting, and networking to your regular job search tactics.
  • Writing to Get Noticed - Recorded June 30, 2011 A great tip we learned in this session is that a cover letter should not summarize your resume, but rather it should provide additional information and insight as to why you are the best fit for the position.
  • Ace the Interview - Recorded July 14, 2011 Among many other excellent tips, this session taught us how to answer 13 of the most commonly asked interview questions.
